    #SadHamComment Personally, I would have tinned the coil ends first, which would have taken longer, and been more of a fluff around, but kept the amount of heat on the switch poles to a minimum. That said, if it works and you’re making QSOs, you’re doing better than me. I’ve been on the air once in 3 months. But it was CW, with a straight key, so I am justified in my feeling of superiority over the _wailing cats_ hams. 😉

    A very interesting video. I was always very impressed by Drew Diamon's homebrew radio projects. I bought all of his books and particularly like his style of construction and the way he explains and displays his diagrams which I find unique. I had to order my books by phone from here in the North East of England. I wondered what ever happened as he seemed to go quiet and never saw any more books by him published. Never met or spoke with him but he was a massive inspiration to me as I built my first ever SSB transceiver which was based on his 40m TCF design which I added some more modifications to but had more fun with this simple rig than any commercial transceiver and it was only 2 watts output. I made a UA-cam video of it and cant believe it was over 15 years ago. (M0DAD Homebrew 40m ssb/cw transceiver) ua-cam.com/video/ndrw0RtvVMo/v-deo.html 73 from the UK...David M0DAD.

I have thus far built his miser linear DC shack PSU (used 2 rewound microwave transformers in series ). Also have built a SMPS filter and his field strength meter and part of his little mate transceiver (rcv section). I agree thoroughly, his designs are tried and tested.73 de VK2AOE.

    I’m delighted to hear stations doing what is described as “slow speed” code and that is, in reality, slow speed code. It drives me nuts hearing people, websites, and contest sponsors use the vocabulary but yet send and receive code that is typically “no faster than 20 words per minute.” That’s not slow, folks. Remember the old days when code was part of the test standing between you and your license upgrade? 20 words per minute (to pass the EXTRA EXAM) played a major role in keeping many hams at “Advanced” (13 words per minute). I’m moving along -at a snail’s pace-toward actually being good at using code. Send my way anything beyond 7 to 10 words per minute and I won’t get anything. Nothing. I know all the letters and numbers-sent at 28 wpm letter rate-but without 4 to 8 times normal letter separation I’m continually two to three words behind trying to head copy. And that means a lot of missed words and failure to understand any of the transmission. Now, if you want to sponsor “Slow Speed Contests” requiring max speed of 10 words per minute, sign me up. Better yet, create a scoring category in the CQ Worldwide CW Contest that recognizes the most QSOs and multipliers logged at NO FASTER THAN 10 words per minute. It’ll never happen, so excuse me while I go back to my practice apps and UA-cam channels.

    What I find puzzling about Newton’s 3rd law and lift generation is the ‘…equal and opposite reaction’, with that portion of the law in my mind suggesting the force is canceled out. ie Airfoil against relative wind producing for example 5kg of downward force, and the law suggesting a 5kg upward force…so we’re back at zero. Where’s the lift?

    Nice video George. Luckily i got my ro ticket in 1970 when there was a shortage of r/o’s . Spent 18 months with Marconi then went freelance for next 12 years. Was a great career and worked solely on ships. Like you i had an interest in flying so got my pilots license in ireland. I then moved to USA where i got a commercial helicopters license with plans to work on oil rigs. However marriage put a damper on that so i guess it was not meant to-be. I did get my ham radio licence but when kids came along there was no time for that. I am back on air now and i teach a cw course on Zoom with Long Island CW club. Still love cw and i am encouraged by number of people who want to learn it despite the fact its no longer a requirement.

    George - I very strongly suggest having independently variable tx & rx frequencies with two variable capacitors, a switch or relay and a spot button. Especially with a direct conversion receiver that allows you to listen above or below the tx frequency, thus dodging interference picked up in the audio image. Eg ua-cam.com/video/HguCFNd4fHQ/v-deo.html

      Thanks Peter. I saw your video for the “toy” 40m rig. Makes a huge amount of sense to dodge that possible nearby opposite “image” freq for a DC rig. … especially if the band is busy. I have a matched variable… might give it a crack! Thanks and 73 OM

There’s a few around 7039-7040KHz When I started I would tune around and get excited that there was some slow Morse that i could try to copy or snag a QSO with. Sadly it was just one letter. There are a number of beacons across the HF spectrum that are for Russian military on their regular voice and CW frequencies. Some broadcast on the hour / half hour. Others are continuous. GAAAAAAHHHHH! ANOTHER video/article saying DDS vfo or signal generator that ISNT DDS!!!! as someone who is searching for DDS specifically, I'm getting pretty fed up with this internet wide mistake of calling PLL multisynth based signal sources like the si5351, DDS. Its even more galling when you actually have part of your presentation covering the harmonics produced from this circuit and not make the connection that it is the direct consequence of it NOT being DDS! Thats why you would use DDS, DDS is harmonic free pure sine waves. As you stated in this video a few times, the si5351 is a clock generator and produces square waves, now this CAN be used fine in most applications with simple filtering of harmonics and many radio projects have successfully employed them. Like I say, its not just here, its seems internet wide that every Arduino, raspberrypi micro controller signal gen/vfo gets labelled DDS, and its incorrect, so sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you. 73 de G0AFV

    • @TheArtofEngineering
      @TheArtofEngineering 2 місяці тому

      Yes …. Correct. But I’m an AMATEUR radio operator not an RF engineer. So it is Digital Synthesis (as the RF is produced by digital means) but NOT DIRECT Digital Synthesis. It is my understanding that DDS only allows a change of frequency if the reference clock is changed …. So this might be why amateur projects don’t use it (too complex?). Why would you use a true DDS for a simple CW transceiver if a PLL derived signal suffices? By the way no offence taken, this type of comment is how we all learn about this hobby we ALL love together: if you do find a DDS (or design one) drop me a line. 73 de VK2AOE

Your description of DDS is totally wrong, Google will sort you out there. There are a number of REAL DDS VFO and sig gens kits and projects already out there, created by amateurs, most seem to use the AD9850 chip, and no they are not really anymore complicated than this circuit. 73 de G0AFV

      G0AFV is right... This is NOT DDS... Little details are important, and this video is not being presented as "entertainment"... I only stopped to watch this myself because I suspected the title was wrong... and sure enough.. it was. Otherwise it's a pretty good video but people like me are always looking for dumb little mistakes like this to form an opinion about how reliable the information really is... Careless neglect of details like this make me wonder what else is wrong in the video... maybe ask a "technical" friend to review it before posting it on YT. There's already enough "noise" out there, don't make it worse... please.

      @@bobsimmons5274I agree Bob but also disagree. I could show any video to several “technical” friends and they would disagree across a wide variety of aspects of any given video, hence leaving this comment section OPEN to express disdain, or point out errors. As for the misuse of this term, that genie has left it’s bottle and is now on a worldwide vacation! Have a look on the net …. If you want to buy or read about this “NOT a DDS VFO but PLL derived digital VFO “ …. the vast majority of products and articles and videos are titled “DDS”. Be it YT, Ali Express, Evil Bay…. etc etc etc. Language, even technical language changes over time due to semantic drift (sometimes towards more precise and correct meaning, often away from it). The tribe have spoken and no amount of zeal will change this fact. YT is a forum that provides YOU the opportunity to share stuff. You could make a video pointing out your disdain of the current practice of misnaming this VFO? I’m thinking about doing one now 😂.
